Leventis letter to SC Election Commission

Senator Phil Leventis' letter to SC State Election Commission requesting the impoundment of voting machines used during the June 8th primaries.

VIA FACSIMILE: (803) 734-9366

June 14, 2010

Mr. John H. Hudgens, III

Chairman

South Carolina State Election Commission

2221 Devine Street, Suite 105
Columbia, SC 29205

Dear Mr. Chairman:

I am writing to request that all voting machines used during Tuesday’s statewide primaries be impounded by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and a full accounting of the vote totals be conducted.

According to published reports, many voting irregularities occurred in the Democratic primary for United States Senate. For instance, it has been reported in 25 precincts in Spartanburg County, one of the Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate received more votes than were actually cast and there were 50 other precincts where votes appeared to be missing from the final count.

I have always believed that the integrity of our voting process must be protected. I have called for paper receipts and auditable machines in the past and I will continue to do so in my capacity as a South Carolina state Senator.

But the current process must be protected. That is why I am making the request that the voting machines be impounded and a full audit be conducted.

Thank you for your attention in this matter.

Sincerely,

Phil Leventis

Senator

District 35

Cc: Chief Reginald I. Lloyd, Director of SLED

Senator Leventis Condemns Attack on Spratt

Senator Leventis Condemns Attack on Spratt

Sumter, SC - South Carolina Senator Phil Leventis (D-Sumter) today condemned the National Republican Congressional Committee for their attack on Congressmen John Spratt. NRCC spokesman Andy Sere attacked Congressman Spratt by implying that his "memory must be failing him" and calling him "Amnesiac John" in a press statement on Monday.

Senator Leventis issued the following statement:

"Statements like that should have no place in our political debate. To denigrate a man who has committed much of his adult life to serving his state and his country is troubling. This type chicanery has no place in a public forum. No one from the National Republican Congressional Committee lives here and none of them would call a family or friend amnesic just because they have a disease which is well controlled."

"It's not the dog in the fight, it's the fight in the dog. My good friend, Congressman Spratt, has one of the keenest minds in the Congress. His understanding of complex issues and ability to navigate the halls of government has served our state well. And disgusting comments like the ones from the Republicans are to be condemned."

Pinckney Calls For Passage of Economic Development Bill

Ridgeland, SC - State Senator Clementa Pinckney today called on his colleagues in the state Senate to pass a critical economic development bill this week. Senate Bill 1054 creates performance-based incentives for companies like the Okatie Crossing developer to locate to South Carolina.

Senator Pinckney issued the following statement on S.1054 and the importance of attracting Okatie Crossings to Jasper County.

"Okatie Crossing has the potential to be a Boeing, or a BMW, for a region of South Carolina with double-digit unemployment rates. We are talking about aggressively recruiting 2000 to 2500 new jobs and a $400 million dollar investment. This legislation is vital for our effort."

"I look forward to the continued debate this week, but the time for action is now. The sooner we pass this legislation, the sooner we can start creating jobs."
